VMware's ft product will be useful for some applications needing this level of protection. As you point out, it comes with a fair amount of overhead. It should also be noted that software-based fault-tolerance, as this is, does not support SMP, so applications are limited to a single processor core. An alternative that has been available for VMware software for over a year is hardware-based fault tolerance ... Intel-based platforms supporting SMP, Windows and Linux VMs, and with six-nines (!) uptime reliability. With VMware HA, this is the best availability you can get.
